Friendship

This week's Booking Through Thursday question:

Buy a Friend a Book Week is October 1-7 (as well as the first weeks of January, April, and July). During this week, you’re encouraged to buy a friend a book for no good reason. Not for their birthday, not because it’s a holiday, not to cheer them up–just because it’s a book.

What book would you choose to give to a friend and why?

And, if you’re feeling generous enough–head on over to Amazon and actually send one on its way!

The last book that I very nearly bought for someone was a book called Barbed Wire and Roses by Peter Yeldham who is an Aussie author who I have never read before. I did think that I should probably read it first to decide whether or not it is good before I send it overseas! As far buying a book this week for someone else...well, the week is still young, but anything is possible!

  1. Buying books for someone is a lot like buying them clothes. It's a personal choice.

  2. Most of the time I have the 'depends on the person' reaction, but I guess my close friends have enough traits in common that I was able to pick a particular book for once. It's also a fairly universally likeable book, though, IMO!

  3. It depends! As you say within a week anything can happen. My friend might send me back the book I bought for her!

  4. What a fun thing! I would love it if someone were to buy me a book out of the blue. Now, who to buy for and what book? I'll have to give that some thought.

  5. It would definitely be harder to buy a book that you haven't read, unless you're buying from a wish list.

  6. Good point ... if I do buy a particular book it is always one I've read unless I already know the person wants it. Somehow that makes the gift seem more personal to me.

  7. I only have one friend who is a reader so I don't buy books for most people.

I will go and buy a bunch of books for my mother but she is more about political mysteries so our reading tastes don't overlap.

What I do for my mom is go to Amazon and put in books she loved and see what it recommends. Either that or she gets a bunch of titles from Costco ;)
