This is one for all the Charlaine Harris fans out there.
For the time being I am all caught up on the Sookie Stackhouse series and the Harper Connelly series.
Of the two other series that she has written, the Lily Bard series and the Aurora Teagarden series, my library has only the second book in the Lily Bard series. One of the other libraries I am a member of has books 3 and 5 of that series, and books 6, 7 and 8 of the Aurorar Teagarden series. That library is however completely out of my way these days so it would be a pain to get out there to borrow them, and then to take them back again. I guess I could see about an ILL.
My question to you fans out there is therefore, are these other series worth reading? Should I try and track them all down to buy or are they kind of take it or leave it books?
By the way, I have posted this post using the schedule thingy I talked about a couple of posts ago! I really am not up at 3am! Let's hope it worked!
ETA: IT WORKED!!!
I have only read the first book in the Lily Bard series so far, and I was very impressed. It's a cozy mystery, but one with teeth. I think you should give it a try just to see what you think. I haven't had the chance to try her Teagarden series yet, but I have the first book around here somewhere for when I'm ready.
ReplyDeleteI've read a few books in the Lily Bard series and one of the later ones in the Aurora Teagarden series.
ReplyDeleteAgree with LF that they're cosy mystery with edge. In a way, they're closer to the Harper Conelly series in terms of feel - they've got same the dark grim atmosphere going. IMO, they're not as good as the Sookie books, but she's a good storyteller and they're very readable. For me, they're books that I would read once but not keepers.
Also for the Aurora Teagarden series - sort of a spoiler:

There was also some sort of controversy - she killed off one of the major characters later in the series and that frustrated a lot of peeps. Think I read this in some Amazon reviews when I was deciding.

Well, I've been raving about the Shakespeare series the last six months, so I would recommend it. But I'd want to read it in order, because it's more about Lily's progress than the mysteries. There are only 5 to read. I'm going to look into the Harper Connelly series and Sookie.
ReplyDeleteI've only read the Shakespeare books by Harris.
Thanks for the opinions! I think I might try and see about the ILL or if I can't get them that way try Ebay or something!
ReplyDeletewell done on the posting thing....but why do you want to?
ReplyDeleteThanks - these questions were on my mind, too. I love the Harper series, and of course, the Sookie series. I recently saw a few of these others at a used bookstore. Dang! I really debated picking them up and I didn't.
ReplyDeleteFriendly PA, I see it being of use for those days when you have loads of posts ready. You can then schedule them and they will post themselves on those days when you might not be anything new to add.
ReplyDeleteI've read the first 4 Teagarden books and really enjoyed them. Not quite as good as Sookie, but for a darker cozy mystery they're quite nice. Penguin is reissuing the Teagarden series here in the US, but I guess that doesn't help you, does it? :(
