2008 Reading in review: The Stats
This year I managed to read 182 books. This is down by 25 on 2007 and 50 from 2006. There's no particular reason why I am reading less, although I do seem to gradually be spending more and more time on the computer. Maybe that's got something to do with it.
I bought or received 67 new books this year and read 19 of those, which means that I have 48 more books in the house unread! Whoops.
I read 16 books by Aussie authors.
By Type
A breakdown by type shows that I read:
9 kids/YA books
33 Crime novels
17 Fantasy novels
36 Historical Fiction
23 Literature (or books that don't easily fall into any of the other categories)
3 Non Fiction
50 Romance novels
10 Women's Fiction/Chick lit
Of the books that I read that were not labelled as Historical Fiction, I had classified 50 of them of being historical in terms of sub-genre, so books with a historical setting were by far my biggest group of reads.
Only one of the books that I read was a reread (Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie)
Grades
I gave the following grades:
5 out of 5 - 3 books
4.5 out of 5 - 40 books
4 out of 5 - 103 books.
3.5 out of 5 - 31 books
3 out of 5 - 3 books
2.5 out of 5 - 1 book
The three books that achieved top grade were The Host by Stephenie Meyer, Master of Verona by David Blixt (review will be posted tomorrow) and The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society by Maryann Shaffer
I posted my favourite Crime Fiction novels for the year here, and over at Historical Tapestry have posted about my favourite HF reads for the year.
Publishers
Here's a breakdown by Publisher where I have read 5 books or more from a single publisher:
Harlequin - 5
Harper Collins - 25
Macmillan - 17
Penguin-Putnam - 25
Random House - 39
Simon & Schuster - 6
Warner - 13
Sourcebooks - 5
Allen & Unwin - 5
New to me authors: 83

Yeap I'm down on how many books I read this year also. I think your right it maybe that we are spending more time blogging now. 182 books is nothing to sneeze at though! I managed to read 76 books last year.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 182 books! And 67 new books! That's so nice. I love new books and I think I'll go crazy if I were to receive that many books in a year. :)
ReplyDeleteA very Happy New Year to you too!
That's so interesting that you read mainly historical fiction! It's a genre I need to read more of. :)
ReplyDelete182 is a feat, I don't think I could ever manage that - well done!
ReplyDeleteI thought you switched to the embedded comment-thingy.... Am I crazy?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I am determined to reach 200 books or more this year. Even if I am not officially challenging myself!
Here's to good reading in 2009! I am going to order the book you want me to read tonight.
Very impressive!!! And wow, you are in lots of challenges! Good luck to you. Have fun.
ReplyDeleteI need to start keeping track of how many books I bring into the house. Hopefully that will shame me into getting some self-restraint :P
ReplyDeleteNymeth, Excel is a list keepers friend!
ReplyDeleteCarolyn Jean, there is a chance that I am in too many challenges, but you know, I can't seem to help myself!
Kailana, I attempted to change to the embedded comment thingo, but it didn't work at all so I had to change back.
Josette, 67 books coming in isn't what makes me crazy, it's the fact that I don't read them at all that does that!
Kathy, I'm not sneezing at it, just don't quite now why there is such a big difference.
Thanks Clare!
Eva, I probably need to read a bit more widely, but you know what...I enjoy HF so I keep reading it. Reading is about enjoyment after all!
You read an amazing amount of books, Marg, even if you are down from last year.
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to reading The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society one of these days.
That is a LOT of books. I do good to do 30-40 a year. And thanks for taking on the National Just Read More Novels Challenge. I bet you can read quite a few in one month.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome yellojkt! My post will be up shortly for it!
ReplyDeleteLiterary Feline, I hope you enjoy it when you do get to it.
Wow - that's an impressive number! Good to see too that most of those ranked in the top grades. That means a lot of good reads :)
ReplyDeleteHere's wishing you lots more good reads for this year.
