Currently Reading: The Passage by Justin Cronin

If you could nominate just one book as having been receiving a lot of hype over the last couple of months, then The Passage would have to be one of the books that comes to mind.

I had the book requested when I started hearing about it, and was number 1 on the list. When I picked it up from the library, there was noone after me, so I was thinking that I might even be able to extend it, however when I checked the catalogue the other day I realise that there are now more than 20 people in the queue behind me, so no extensions.

Becky from Page Turners hosts the meme Book Beginnings on Friday, where the idea is that you share the first sentence of your current read. I have been meaning to join in for the last few weeks, but this really seemed liked the perfect time to join in. So here are the opening sentences of The Passage:

Before she became the Girl from Nowhere - the One Who Walked In, the First and Last and Only, who lived a thousand years - she was just a little girl in Iowa, named Amy. Amy Harper Belafonte.

In addition, here is a video of Justin Cronin talking about writing The Passage:

  4. Heh, here's the hold county at my county,

599 holds on first copy returned of 105 copies

Last I looked I was around 150 of those 599, but that's better than the 220 when I first placed my hold :)

  6. The hype is actually putting me off this book! Looking forward to your take on whether it is worth it or not...

  7. Li, I know what you mean. That happens to me sometimes too.

Zibilee, I hope your hubby and you both get to enjoy it. I love the idea that you would be able to talk to each other about a book that you have both read.

Misfit, we never get that many holds on a single item. The most I have ever seen is about 40, and that seems to take forever to get through, so I can't imagine having to wait for 200 odd people to read it before me.

Juju, I will be over to check out your Book Beginning a bit later in the weekend!

Rose City Reader and Laurel, I did think it was a very evocative opening sentence

  12. That's a great opening line! I really need to start participating in this meme. Thanks for stopping by my mailbox.

In regards to the BDB, I just finished Vishous's story and although many reviewers have been critical of it, it was actually my favorite. But then, Vishous is my favorite Brother, so I'm biased!

  14. This is one of the best post apocalyptic novels I've ever read. A thoroughly enjoyable escape into another spin-off of our world.
