Ya me despido!

It's hard to believe that the World Cup is over for another four years. At the start of the tournament none of us knew what a vuvuzeala was, and now we will be grateful for the music of Brazil for the next tournament. None of us had heard of Paul the Octopus (yes he has his own Wikipedia page) let alone his extraordinary tipping ability and now Spain is the holder of the World Cup.

For this Aussie, watching the World Cup meant either staying up very late or getting up very early. After the disappointment of getting up at 4.30am to watch us lose the first game to Germany 4-0 it was always going to be an uphill battle to get through to the second round, a battle we couldn't win and so we went home early. Here's hoping that we make it to the next World Cup, and maybe we can make it through to the next round then.

At the beginning of the tournament, I mentioned that one of the best things about World Cup is seeing lots of Lucas Neill on TV. That will now change and it will be less frequent that we hear too much about anything other than English Premier League on any of the normal channels. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

In closing, I thought I would share the theme song that SBS,  our main broadcaster of the World Cup, had for this year, just because it was a really good football song, and incorporate many other countries into it as well.

So now I can stay up late and watch Tour de France for the next couple of weeks. After that, I might have to try and get some solid sleep in before the English Premier League starts up again!

**According to Google, my blog post title means It's time to say goodbye. At least that is what I hope it says and not something else!

  1. Hi Marg - I'm just about to post about the World Cup. It's over! I know what you mean by waiting for the English Premiership to start up again - my husband already has the date marked on the calendar. What team do you support? It's Arsenal(me) and Chelsea (him) for us here. We had the football song also over here. My kids were dancing to it as the Cup ended.

  2. oh boy, i'm so bad! i'm not a huge sports fan--i'll go to a yankees game a few times each season and will get down to tampa for spring training every spring, but i'm not much for football, soccer, basketball, or any other sports!

i did know the world cup was going on and did hear the south american noise makers, too!

i'm happy to hear that you're finally going to get some sleep. rest up before the bike riding begins! :)

  4. Becky at least the A League is on at reasonable times! lol

Nat, the bike riding is already on. There are a couple of weeks to go I think, then I will get a break.

Susan, your husband is a man with excellent taste! Chelsea for me. I didn't realise that the song was a world wide one! Glad it was because I liked it a lot.

  5. Can't believe it's over, best world cup ever for me, mainly because Uruguay has been crap every other time I've seen them. I can't wait for the next one!

And yep, "Ya me despido" is a very appropriate title. My translation would be "Saying goodbye now!"

  6. I can't say that I'm really into this sport but I DID really enjoy watching some of the games with my husband (he's a huge fan). And I LOVE that song - it's so perfect! Thanks for sharing.

PS. Now that the games are over, get some sleep girl! LOL

  7. Every four years the world cup takes over our lives here, too, Marg. My husband has been a serious football fan since he was just a wee kid (a long time ago!) ... so football is IT around here. At least this time, he wasn't getting up at 4 am to watch the games like in 2006. This time most of the games were on during the day. Not so great when you have to go to work, but at least he was able to watch a lot of the weekday matches from his computer while he did desk work. I got into it more this year than ever before, so now I can't wait for the World Cup in Brazil in 2014! Of course there's all sorts of other tournaments to watch before then...
