To Say Nothing of the Dog is one of those books that I have had sitting on my bookshelves for a while, and always looked at and thought that I really want to read that book one day, and yet it still stayed on the shelves. In this case it has been there for more than 5 years.
With a little bit of encouragement from Aarti (we are planning to chat about reading this together) I have finally opened it up, and I have to say that so far I am enjoying it very much. It has the kind of irreverence and wit which I associate with authors like Terry Pratchett and Jasper Fforde, as well as time travel. I was originally recommended this book because I had enjoyed Outlander by Diana Gabaldon so much. So far, the only thing that there seems to be in common really is the time travel aspect, but to me it is very different to that novel.
I suspect that at the end of this novel I am going to be left wondering why on earth I waited anywhere near this long to read it, and how soon can I glom my way through Connie Willis's backlist!
Oh, oh, oh, I enjoyed this book. If you like it half as much as I did, I'll add one more suggestion on to that of working through Connie Willis's backlist (which I find uneven, but with some other gems as well).
ReplyDeleteRead Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome, which I believe was an inspiration of sorts for To Say Nothing of the Dog.
Enjoy your reading!
Yes, I've only heard great things about this book. I've had another book of hers, Bellwether on my TBR pile for a while too - can't wait to read it. Connie Willis sounds like an author I will really enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI've had it on my TBR for just about that long, too. Well done for picking it up, I'm inspired to follow you!
ReplyDeleteI'be heard soooo many good things about this, I'm looking forward to your review!

ReplyDeleteI’m listening to Three Men in a Boat right now because I’ve read so many good things about To Say Nothing of the Dog and wanted to have the background before starting - I hate missing references!
ReplyDeleteYou'll love it, and move onto the backlist. A real original, unlike so many books.
ReplyDeleteI also have this sitting on my shelf. Glad you are enjoying it and I hope to get to it eventually :)
ReplyDeleteI loved this book and have, in fact, read it twice. Enjoyed it both times. I am a BIG fan of Connie Willis. My favorite books of hers are: THE DOOMSDAY BOOK, PASSAGE, TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG, BELLWEATHER and LINCOLN'S DREAMS. Oh, and this year's BLACK OUT which I finished just recently.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the sequel ALL CLEAR which is due out, I believe, this fall. I think she is not only brilliant, but unique.
