Welcome to this month's edition of Six Degrees of Separation, which is a monthly meme hosted by Kate from Books Are My Favourite and Best. The idea is to start with a specific book and make a series of links from one book to the next using whatever link you can find and see where you end up after six links. I am also linking this post up with The Sunday Salon, hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz.
This month's starting point is Kairos by Jenny Eckenberg. This book was recently announced as the winner of International Book Prize for 2024. The book was translated from German.
The last book I read that was translated from German was Carsten Henn's The Door-to-Door Bookstore which I read last year. (my review)
Another translated book about bookstores is Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum who is a Korean author. I am reading this at the moment.A couple of years ago I read Island of Sea Women by Lisa See, which is set on the Korean island of Jeju. We are doing a cruise next year which will take us to Jeju which we are very excited about.
Recently I have been listening to Song of the Sun God by Shankari Chandran. What is the connection? Well, this book is set in the island nation of Sri Lanka so they are both set on islands.. We know that we will visit Sri Lanka in the next couple of years. We know who we are going with, we just have to find the date! So the other connection is Jeju and Sri Lanka are both places we intend to visit.
For the next connection, I am using the sun connection as my link and choosing Tiny Sunbirds Far Away by Christie Watson, which is partially set in Nigeria.
For my last choice, I am selecting a book I just learned about the day I was writing this post, so I haven't actually read it yet. The book is A Nurses Tale by Ola Awonubi and it feaatures a Nigerian nurse in WWII London. Christie Watson used to be a nurse, so that's another connection between these two books.
I need to stop here which is a shame as I straight away thought of another book about WWII nurses.Next month the starting point is with The Museum of Modern Love by Heather Rose
Where did your chain take you this month?
The only one of these I have read is The Door-to-Door Bookstore, which I enjoyed, if a bit too sweet. You really can't go wrong with a book about books!
ReplyDeleteHere is my chain: https://tinyurl.com/2yb9nr5b
Definitely makes a reader happy to read a book about books!

DeleteLovely chain. I see I wasn't very unique using translated books in my chain.
ReplyDeleteYou were unique in using all translated books though! At least I haven't seen anyone else doing the whole chain yet
DeleteHaving visited South Korea, I'd already made a point of reading Lisa See's book, and I'll definitely be heading for Hwang-Bo Reum's book too, having enjoyed browsing in Busan's neighbourhood where a whole neighbourhood is devoted to books. But each of your choices looks appetising.
ReplyDeleteWe only have a short time in South Korea so not sure we will make it to Busan. I would love to though.
DeleteI always love seeing where serendipity takes you on your chains of books. I have not read any of these and I've only even heard of two of them---Kairos, of course, and The Island of Sea Women.
ReplyDeleteI'm very curious about Kairos. I am eager to hear more about this book.
Kairos does sound interesting Deb!
DeleteI have Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop sitting on my nightstand waiting to be read! It sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteI didn't love it as much as I expected to!
DeletePssst! You forgot to include the link to the Carsten book where you said "my review". I found it by doing a search. :-)
ReplyDeleteI was not able to find your review of Kairos, if you've done one.
Both books sound good though!
Whoops. Sorry for missing the link. I haven''t read Kairos
DeleteI loved Lisa See's book. I am so excited for you that you are going to see JeJu on your cruise. I haven't read any of the other books you feature and many are new to me, but they all sound good, Marg. Thank you for sharing! I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYou too!
DeleteI love Lisa See's books and really enjoyed The Island of Sea Women. Your cruise does sound exciting!
ReplyDeleteI am very much looking forward to it!
