This week....

I'm reading

Last week I finished There are Rivers in The Sky by Elif Shafak. What an amazing author she is! There was so much in the book that I wanted to note down so I could remember it! I loved The Island of Missing Trees when I read it a couple of years ago and this one is right up there.

I them read Widows Waive the Rules by Julia Jarman for review which will be up on Wednesday. It's set on a cruise ship. Let's just say, I hope our cruise in March is a little less dramatic!

I am now reading Midnight in Paris by Gillian Harvey, who is pretty much an auto-read for me these days! This book is a bit different from her usual ones but it is really good so far! My review for this one will be up this week too!

The theme for my read on a theme bookclub this month is 25. I have chosen to listen to the audiobook of The Truth by Terry Pratchett. It was published in the year 2000, so is 25 years old, and is the 25th book in the Discworld series. This one has a different narrator to the one that does Hogfather, which is the book that I have listened to in the lead up for Christmas for the last 4 years at least.

I made an impulsive decision to join a chapter a day readalong for War and Peace. Now I have to come up with some kind of system to make sure that I read a chapter everyday!

I'm watching

Not a lot!

Life

Robert is now back at work, and I am starting to turn my thinking towards trying to find a new job! I could get used to this easy life, although there are some days when I feel a bit lonely, especially on the days that Robert goes into the office. We don't sit and talk all day when he is working, but I can hear his voice in the background while he is on calls. For the most part though, I really enjoy not being stressed, and doing bits and pieces here and there, reading, blogging, etc.  I do miss the structure of working though.

I did go and see Dear Evan Hansen with a couple of friends. I really enjoyed it, and found it very powerful and moving! I am now listening to the soundtrack on repeat. I am doing this thing this year where I am creating a Spotify playlist for anything musical we do during the year, so I need to pick a couple of songs to go on my playlist, but I can't decide which one. Each concert we go to we will pick a song or two and slowly build the story of our musical year!

  1. My youngest son is currently on a 12 day South Pacific cruise with his girlfriend and her family, and my oldest daughter and her partner are doing the same one later this month.
My husband still has another week at home but I start my new job tomorrow.

Wishing you a happy reading week

  2. I loved The Truth. I read the entire Discworld series when we were in the throws of Covid. It was the perfect distraction. I have watched The Hogfather movie every Christmas since.
I read War and Peace a very long time ago when I was at university. I just realized that was 50 years ago!
There Are Rivers in the Sky sounds wonderful. I went to make sure I had it on my goodreads list, and not only do I have it, it's on my MustReadIn2025 list.

    1. I still haven't watched the movie of Hogfather, at least not for a very long long time.

  3. I read War and Peace as a chapter-a-day book a few years back. I enjoyed the Peace parts, but the War parts were a bit of a struggle for me. I felt a great sense of accomplishment when I finished it. I think, if I remember right, it has 365 chapters.

I keep meaning to read more Discworld. I was crazy about the wacky characters and zany plots of the few I have read.

  4. There are Rivers in the Sky sounds appealing and I am always adding new suggestions to my Goodreads list.
I hope you find a new job that suits you. I worked down the hall from my husband for decades before we retired from the same agency. It was great.

    1. A chapter a day is definitely a lot easier to think of achieving than just saying read War and Peace!!

  8. I couldn't resist popping in when I saw the War and Peace cover! I am doing the same and am about to read Ch 14. I do it first thing before I read anything else. I started off on Kindle because my print copy didn't arrive for quite awhile but now I am into the print one where I can scribble notes to myself about who is who etc!!

    1. I have had this copy for so long! I did start it a couple of years ago but only got around 200 pages in. Reading it a chapter a day should make it easier to get to the end!

  9. One chapter a day is a great way of reading this long book! Enjoy!

  11. Good luck with War and Peace! I read Anna Karenina quite a while ago and it was work. I found a printable bookmark somewhere (Maybe on Oprah's Book Club?) that had a list of characters on it because I could not keep them all straight. But a chapter a day sounds doable and just think of the bragging rights you'll have when you finish it!

I love your idea for a yearly Spotify playlist.

This sounds like the perfect year to read The Truth for your challenge!

I haven't worked for the six years we've been traveling and don't miss it. My last job stressed me out so badly, I still have the occasional nightmare about it. And with all this "free time" on my hands, I still don't do all the things I want to do! At least I get the errands and chores done so we're free to play on my husband's days off.

    Happy reading!

    1. I read Anna Karenina with Oprah's Book Club. There were some good resources with that so it makes sense that you might have a bookmark from there.

  12. I hope you enjoy War and Peace! I stretched it out for nearly a year and that worked for me. I read a short story by Elif Shafak a couple of years ago and really liked it. I would love to try more of her work. There are Rivers in the Sky sounds wonderful. I have heard good things about Dear Evan Hansen. I hope to see it someday. I hope you have a great week, Marg!
